Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon & the doggie field trip that won best day of the whole trip
Why Kauai?
We did Kauai as the second half of our November 2025 trip — flying in from Oahu for 6 nights at the Grand Hyatt. After the energy and pace of Oahu, Kauai felt like a completely different world. Slower, greener, more dramatic. The kind of place where you genuinely don’t need a packed itinerary to have a great day.
Na Pali Coast from a catamaran. Waimea Canyon from every lookout. Sea turtles on the beach at Poipu. And a humane society doggie field trip that produced the best hiking we’ve ever done with the boys — six miles, zero complaints.
This was part of a two-island trip. We did Oahu first, then flew inter-island to Kauai. For the full story including combined costs, flight strategy, and the Oahu leg — see our Oahu Guide →
Our 6-Day Itinerary
Our quick inter-island flight from Oahu delivered us to Kauai by mid-afternoon. The Grand Hyatt greeted us with an upgrade to an oceanfront room — watching the waves roll in from the lanai instantly melted away any travel fatigue. We didn’t waste the afternoon. The Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail is right near the resort — a beautiful coastal path with stunning ocean views, not too strenuous, perfect for arriving legs. Back at the resort we sampled the pools before calling it an early night.
After the pace of Oahu, we designated this our official chill day — and the Grand Hyatt delivered. The pool complex is a water wonderland: multiple pools, a lazy river winding through lush tropical landscaping, and a waterslide the kids couldn’t get enough of. We floated, splashed, napped on lounge chairs. No schedule, no rushing. Sometimes the best vacation days are the ones with nothing on the calendar.
Alarm at the crack of dawn for the Kauai Sea Tours catamaran departing at 7:45 AM. We started with snorkeling in crystal-clear water — and a sea turtle glided past us, completely unbothered. Then came the main event: cruising along the Na Pali Coast. I won’t sugarcoat it — the waters were choppy, the ride was bumpy, some of us battled nausea. But the moment those towering emerald cliffs came into view, every uncomfortable moment faded away. Thousands of feet of fluted green rock, hidden beaches, cascading waterfalls. We returned around 2pm and spent the afternoon recovering at the pool.
Loaded up the Guide Along app before hitting the road — it narrates as you drive and tells you every worthwhile stop. A genuine game changer for scenic drives. The North Shore delivered around every bend: Wailua Falls (that iconic double-tiered waterfall), Kilauea Lighthouse on a dramatic cliff with sweeping ocean views, Hanalei Pier with its perfect mountain backdrop, and a dozen unplanned stops because every turn was another postcard. For lunch we stopped at Chicken in a Barrel — a local spot on the way to the North Shore that’s worth the detour. A few in our group weren’t feeling adventurous and tried the Thai restaurant nearby instead, which was apparently excellent too.
Here’s a vacation hack nobody tells you about: the Kauai Humane Society’s Doggie Field Trip program. For $75 you spend the day with an adoptable dog. They give you a backpack with everything — water, treats, waste bags. We kept this as a surprise for Raynuv and Aryan. When they realized we were picking up a furry friend for the day, their faces lit up like Christmas morning. Our dog joined us on the Kilauea Ridge Trail, and something miraculous happened — the kids who usually complain about tired legs halfway through any hike trekked six full miles without a single grumble. They were too busy bonding with their new best friend. When we asked later which day was their favorite of the entire Hawaii trip, both boys answered immediately and without hesitation: the doggie day.
Grabbed Subway sandwiches for the road and drove up to Waimea Canyon — the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, and the name is earned. We stopped at every major lookout: Waimea Canyon Lookout where red and green layers of earth create an almost otherworldly landscape, Puu Hinahina for a different angle, and Kalalau Lookout where you can see all the way down to the Na Pali Coast from above. Each stop was genuinely different. We stood in near silence at most of them. On the way back we stopped at Poipu Beach — massive green sea turtles lounging on the sand, completely unfazed by the kids standing right next to them. We snorkeled just off the beach and were rewarded with schools of colorful fish. Best driving day of the whole trip.
The Grand Hyatt gave us a late checkout — one final morning at the pool complex. We floated the lazy river one last time, the kids hit the waterslide again, and we sat there reflecting on a week that had given us adventure, wildlife, relaxation, and real family time. Kauai had delivered on every promise. Evening flight home — sun-tanned, memory cards full, hearts full of aloha.
Where We Stayed
Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa
One of the best point redemptions we’ve ever made. Oceanfront location, world-class pool complex with lazy river and waterslide, right near Poipu Beach. They upgraded us to an oceanfront room. Rooms run $900+ per night during peak season. We booked 6 nights on 150K Hyatt points at 25K/night, transferred from Chase Ultimate Rewards.
⚠️ Book before May 2026: Grand Hyatt Kauai is moving to Category 8 with dynamic pricing — expect 35–70K points/night after the devaluation. If Kauai is on your list, now is the time.
★ 150K Hyatt points — 6 nights🏆 Other Points Options on Kauai
Marriott — Poipu & Princeville
Several Marriott Bonvoy options around Kauai — typically around 50K points/night. More points than Hyatt but Bonvoy is easier to accumulate given the broader card ecosystem.
✓ ~50K Marriott/nightHilton Properties
Hilton is present on Kauai but point redemptions run on the pricier side. Worth it if you have a large Hilton balance or Diamond status — just run the math first.
✓ Higher point costGetting There
Kauai’s main airport is Lihue Airport (LIH). For us this was the second leg — we flew Detroit to Oahu first, then took the inter-island Southwest flight to Kauai for $332 using a Southwest credit. The return home from Lihue used 44K Avios. Combined with the Oahu outbound (60K Avios), the whole round trip cost 104K Avios total for the family — effectively round-trip Hawaii flights for under 22K points per person.
