Kauai With Kids
6 Day ITINERARY
After exploring the vibrant energy of Oahu, we were ready for Kauai’s more laid-back charm. Known as the Garden Island, Kauai promised dramatic landscapes, pristine beaches, and a slower pace perfect for families. Here’s how our week unfolded on this magical Hawaiian island.
Day 0: Our quick inter-island flight from Oahu delivered us to Kauai by mid-afternoon, and we couldn’t have asked for a better welcome. The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort greeted us with an incredible surprise—an upgrade to an oceanfront room. Watching the waves roll in from our lanai instantly melted away any travel fatigue.
Not ones to waste a beautiful afternoon, we ventured to the nearby Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail for some light hiking. This coastal path offers stunning ocean views and a glimpse into Kauai’s natural beauty without being too strenuous—perfect for our first day. Back at the resort, we sampled the pools before calling it an early night, already dreaming of the adventures ahead.
Day 1: Sometimes the best vacation days are the ones without a packed itinerary. After our whirlwind exploration of Oahu, we designated this as our official “chill day,” and the Grand Hyatt Kauai delivered in spades.
The resort’s pool complex is essentially a water wonderland—multiple pools, a lazy river that winds through lush tropical landscaping, and a water slide that the kids couldn’t get enough of. We floated, we splashed, we napped on lounge chairs. The kids were in absolute heaven, and honestly, so were we. No schedule, no rushing, just pure family relaxation under the Hawaiian sun.
Day 2: The alarm clock came early for our Napali Coast catamaran tour with Kauai Sea Tours, departing at 7:45 AM. But as the saying goes, the early bird gets the unforgettable views—and perhaps sees some sea turtles too.
Our morning began with snorkeling in crystal-clear waters teeming with colorful tropical fish. The real highlight? A graceful sea turtle gliding past us, utterly unbothered by our presence. Pure magic.
Then came the main event: cruising along the legendary Napali Coast. I won’t sugarcoat it—the waters were choppy, the ride was bumpy, and some of us battled a bit of nausea. But the moment those towering emerald cliffs came into view, every uncomfortable moment faded away. Our captain skillfully navigated close to the dramatic coastline, giving us jaw-dropping views of hidden beaches, cascading waterfalls, and those iconic fluted cliffs that rise thousands of feet from the ocean.
We returned to shore around 2 PM, sun-kissed and exhilarated. The afternoon called for pool time and relaxation—the perfect counterbalance to our morning adventure.
Day 3: Another early start, but this time we were hitting the road for Kauai’s stunning North Shore. Armed with the Guide Along app (seriously a game-changer—it narrates as you drive and alerts you to every worthwhile stop), we embarked on one of those quintessential Hawaiian scenic drives.
Our stops included:
- Wailua Falls: That iconic double-tiered waterfall you’ve probably seen in photos
- Kilauea Lighthouse: Perched on a dramatic cliff with sweeping ocean views
- Hanalei Pier: A picture-perfect spot with mountain backdrop
- Plus numerous impromptu photo stops because, honestly, every turn revealed another postcard-worthy view
Day 4: Here’s a vacation hack for families with dog-loving kids: the Kauai Humane Society’s Doggie Field Trip program. For just $75, you get to spend the day with an adoptable dog, complete with a backpack full of everything you need—water, treats, waste bags, the works.
We’d kept this as a surprise for Raynuv and Aryan. When they realized we were picking up a furry friend for the day, their faces lit up like Christmas morning. Our four-legged companion joined us for a hike on the Kilauea Ridge Trail, and something miraculous happened: the kids who usually complain about tired legs halfway through any hike? They trekked six miles without a single grumble. They were too busy bonding with their new best friend.
When we asked the kids later which day was their favorite of the entire Hawaii trip, they didn’t hesitate: the doggie day, hands down. Mission accomplished, and our hearts were full.
Day 5: Day five took us on the scenic drive to Waimea Canyon, often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”—and for good reason. We grabbed sandwiches from a local shop for a picnic lunch and hit the road.
The views on this drive were absolutely the best of our Kauai adventure. We stopped at every major lookout:
- Waimea Canyon Lookout: Where red and green layers of earth create an almost otherworldly landscape
- Puu Hinahina Lookout: More canyon glory from a different angle
- Kalalau Lookout: Where you can see down to the Napali Coast from above
Each stop offered something unique, and we found ourselves just standing there in awe, trying to capture both photos and memories.
We capped off the day at Poipu Beach, one of Kauai’s family-friendly gems. The main attraction? Massive green sea turtles lounging right on the sand, completely unfazed by their human admirers. We also did some easy snorkeling just off the beach and were rewarded with schools of colorful fish. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
Day 6: All good things must end, but thankfully our evening flight gave us time for one final morning at the Grand Hyatt. The resort graciously accommodated a late checkout, allowing us to squeeze in a few more hours at those incredible pools.
As we floated in the lazy river one last time, we reflected on a week that gave us adventure, relaxation, unforgettable wildlife encounters, and quality family time. Kauai had delivered on every promise.
Now, as we headed back home, we carried with us sun-tanned skin, memory cards full of photos, and hearts full of aloha. Until next time, Garden Island.
Kauai Hotels with Credit Card Points
One of the best-kept secrets of savvy travelers? Using credit card points to book luxury Hawaiian resorts that might otherwise break the budget. Kauai offers several excellent options across major hotel chains, making your Garden Island dreams surprisingly affordable.
Our Choice: Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa
We booked the Grand Hyatt Kauai using 25,000 Hyatt points per night (transferred from Chase Ultimate Rewards), and it proved to be one of the best point redemptions we’ve ever made. At this rate, you’re getting exceptional value for what’s consistently ranked as one of the island’s premier resorts.
What makes it special:
- Oceanfront location with stunning views
- World-class pool complex featuring a lazy river, waterslide, and multiple pools
- Tons of family-friendly activities on-site
- Prime location just minutes from Poipu Beach, one of Kauai’s best beaches for families
- Full-service resort amenities including restaurants, spa, and beach access
The beauty of using points here is that you’re experiencing a resort where rooms can easily run $900+ per night during peak season. At 25K points per night, you’re getting incredible bang for your buck—or rather, points.
Marriott Bonvoy Options
Kauai also features several Marriott properties that can be booked with points, typically ranging around 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. While this is double the Hyatt point cost, Marriott Bonvoy points are often easier to accumulate given the larger number of co-branded credit cards and the broader Marriott footprint.
Popular Marriott properties in Kauai include options in the Poipu and Princeville areas, offering everything from beachfront luxury to more boutique experiences.
Hilton Honors Properties
Hilton does have a presence on Kauai, but fair warning: point redemptions tend to be on the pricier side. While Hilton points are generally easier to earn in bulk (thanks to frequent transfer bonuses and promotions), you’ll typically need significantly more points per night compared to Hyatt options.
If you’re swimming in Hilton points or have Diamond status that unlocks valuable perks, it can still be worth considering—just run the math on point value to ensure you’re getting a good deal.
Flights: Getting to Kauai
Most travelers heading to Kauai fly into Kahului Airport (LIH), a conveniently located but smaller airport. If you’re exploring multiple islands, consider booking multi-city flights for better deals and flexibility. There are always plenty of options to find competitive cash rates or make the most of your points. For tips on finding the best flights, be sure to check out our flight booking guide.
We flew Detroit (DTW) to Honolulu (HNL) and returned from Lihue (LIH) to DTW in economy for just 26,000 points per person total. That’s incredible value for round-trip Hawaii flights.
The Points Strategy
Turkish Airlines (10K each way): This is the holy grail—booking United flights through Turkish Airlines for just 10,000 miles each way. The catch? Availability is practically non-existent, especially for families or peak travel times.
Finnair Avios (Our Winner): After striking out on Turkish, I discovered Finnair’s fixed award chart offered way more availability:
- American Airlines flights: 15,000 Avios each way
- Alaska Airlines flights: 11,000 Avios each way
The bonus: A 20% Avios transfer promotion made it even sweeter. I only needed to transfer ~21,700 points per person to get the 26,000 Avios needed. That’s effectively Hawaii flights for under 22K points per person.
The Finnair Catch
You can’t book Finnair awards online—you’ll need to call or chat with their agents. Slightly annoying, but absolutely worth it for this value. Search award availability on British Airways or AA.com first, then contact Finnair with your preferred flights ready.
