Our family guides to the best parks in North America

National parks are some of the best trips you can do with kids. Wide open spaces, real wildlife, and landscapes that make everyone go quiet for a second — even the ones who were fighting in the back seat five minutes ago.

A few things we’ve learned after visiting parks across the US and Canada: book lodging early (prices are brutal close to the date), go in spring or fall if you can, and always have a backup plan because weather doesn’t care about your itinerary.

Pro tip: The America the Beautiful Pass ($80/year) gets your whole family into every US national park for a year. If you’re doing two or more parks, it pays for itself immediately.

💡 General National Park Tips

📅 Spring and Fall are the sweet spots. Better weather than summer, a fraction of the crowds, and significantly cheaper lodging.
🏨 Book lodging 6+ months out. Hotels inside and near popular parks sell out fast and prices spike badly close to the date.
🎟️ Get the America the Beautiful Pass. $80/year covers the whole family at every US national park. Two parks and it’s already paid for itself.
🎒 A child carrier changes everything. Young kids tire out fast on trails. A good carrier means you can tackle any hike without cutting it short.
🛒 Stock up before you enter. Groceries and supplies inside or near the parks are expensive. Shop at a normal grocery store on the way in.
