Why Grand Cayman?

We’d been eyeing Grand Cayman for years and finally pulled the trigger for spring break — booking the whole trip nearly 11 months in advance. And honestly? It delivered on every expectation. Seven Mile Beach is genuinely one of the most beautiful stretches of sand we’ve ever stood on. Powder white, calm turquoise water, shallow enough for the kids to splash around without a second of worry.

“It’s one of the safest destinations in the Caribbean. The most dangerous thing about Cayman — especially coming from the US — is driving on the left. You get used to it in about five minutes.”

The marine life blew us away. We held sea turtles, kissed stingrays, and walked among bright orange starfish — all in the same trip. The kids still talk about it.

The honest caveat: Cayman is expensive. Flights, hotels, food, and activities all carry high taxes and spring break premiums. But we used IHG points, Alaska Air miles, and a Hilton resort credit to cut a $19,689 trip down to $3,691 out of pocket. That’s the game.

Our 6-Night Itinerary

Our two-hotel strategy: 2 nights at Holiday Inn Resort (North Sound) → 4 nights at Kimpton Seafire (Seven Mile Beach). We booked this 11 months in advance — especially important for Kimpton during spring break. The IHG 4th night free benefit only works if a 4-night award window is actually available, and those disappear fast during peak season.

Day 1 Arrival & Settling In

We landed around 1pm at Owen Roberts — tiny, stress-free airport. Grabbed the rental car and immediately had to remind ourselves: drive on the LEFT. It felt weird for about three minutes and then completely normal. First stop was Foster’s at Camana Bay — easily the best grocery store on the island, and it also has an excellent buffet. They serve everything from pizza and burgers to sushi, and we all ended up eating way too much. After that we stocked up on breakfast food, snacks, juice boxes, and drinks for the week — saved us a small fortune vs. buying at resort prices. Checked into Holiday Inn and the kids headed straight for the pool on the North Sound. First night dinner was turkey sandwiches from our grocery haul. No complaints.

Day 2 Pier, Kayaks & Turtle Centre ⭐

Breakfast from our grocery haul, then a slow morning at the Holiday Inn. The 240-foot pier stretching over the Caribbean is genuinely impressive — the kids spotted fish below while we had our coffee. We rented kayaks on the North Sound, which is perfectly calm and protected for little ones. In the afternoon we headed to the Cayman Turtle Conservation Centre. We caught the shark and fish feeding, but the highlight was the snorkel lagoon — packed with tropical fish and absolutely worth the add-on ticket. Swimming alongside the turtles was something else. There’s also a big pool with a waterslide that the kids loved. Dinner at Driftwood Bar & Grill — the kids demolished burgers and we had a solid butter chicken.

Day 3 Move to Kimpton + Chill ⭐

Lazy morning. Walked the pier one more time, finished packing, and drove to Kimpton Seafire. We’d requested early check-in the night before and even though our room wasn’t ready, the pool complex was open. We headed straight to the kids’ splash zone where an attendant assigned us a cabana at no charge — a nice surprise. The boys were completely done for the day before we even unpacked. That evening we enjoyed the wine hour with drinks and appetizers, played some Uno, and kept dinner simple with the in-room menu. Sometimes the best days are the ones with nothing on the calendar.

Day 4 🎂 Island Drive, Blowholes & Birthday Dinner

Kimpton has a fantastic bakery that makes fresh items every day — we took full advantage most mornings. This morning we decided to drive around the island. First stop was the East End to see the Blowholes — natural rock formations that shoot seawater 20–30 feet into the air. Raynuv and Aryan ran as close as we’d let them every single time. On the way back we stopped for fresh coconut water from a roadside vendor — one of those simple moments that sticks with you. That evening was the birthday dinner at Ms. Piper’s. We went all out — shared starters, mains for everyone, cocktails for the adults. We’d mentioned the birthday when booking and the staff made it genuinely special. They brought out a small cake with a candle and our server sang for my wife. Used about $200 of the Hilton credit. One of the best meals of the trip.

Day 5 The Grand Tour — Starfish, Stingrays & Coral ⭐

The best day of the trip. We started at Starfish Point — a shallow, calm lagoon where you walk among dozens of bright orange starfish. Completely magical, especially for Aryan. Then Stingray City: waded waist-deep surrounded by dozens of southern stingrays. They’re fed squid by the guides so they’re completely used to people — totally safe. We held them, kissed them, and let the kids get right in there. Raynuv was fearless. Then snorkelled Coral Gardens — stunning reef life and more colourful fish than we could count. The whole thing took about four and a half hours and we were done afterwards. Stopped at Foster’s again for the buffet — excellent Indian biryani and butter chicken — before heading back to Kimpton where we didn’t move from the beach for the rest of the afternoon. Dinner at Avecita inside Kimpton — excellent Spanish food.

Day 6 Last Full Day — Nothing on the Calendar

No agenda and it was perfect. Slept in, ate breakfast from our grocery stash, and split the morning between the pool and Seven Mile Beach. In the afternoon, Dad and Raynuv took advantage of the free stand-up paddleboard rentals — a lot of fun and completely free as a Kimpton guest. That evening we used the remaining $200 of our Hilton credit at Ms. Piper’s for the farewell dinner. By this point we knew exactly what to order — mezze platter, chicken skewers, Koji burger, kids’ meals all around. We packed everything that night. 2pm flight the next day meant leaving the hotel by 11am.

Day 7 Departure Morning

One last walk on Seven Mile Beach as a family before loading up the car. Owen Roberts is genuinely one of the most relaxed airports we’ve ever been through — security took about 10 minutes. Grabbed Cayman rum cake at duty-free on the way out. The only souvenir you actually need from this island. Everyone back home loved it.

Where We Stayed

Book early — seriously. We booked 11 months in advance. Kimpton during spring break fills up fast, and the IHG 4th night free benefit only works if a 4-night award window is actually available. By the time most people start planning a spring break trip, those windows are already gone.

🏖️

Holiday Inn Resort Grand Cayman

Solid hotel with great value for 2 nights. Nice beachfront pool on the North Sound, a 240-foot pier, and a calm lagoon for kayaking. Before we arrived we emailed the hotel mentioning it was a birthday trip — they upgraded us to a 1,600 sq ft oceanfront two-bedroom suite with a full kitchen. The room was going for close to $2,000/night during spring break. We paid 25K IHG points. Always worth sending that email.

🌟

Kimpton Seafire Resort

Might be the nicest hotel we’ve ever stayed in. Right on Seven Mile Beach. Exceptional pool complex with kids’ waterslides, splash zone, and zero-entry pool. Free non-motorized watersports — kayaks, paddleboards, snorkel gear. Free wine and snacks every evening 5–6pm (we never missed it). We were upgraded to a premium view room. The room was going for $2,500–3,000/night during spring break. We used 210K IHG points for 4 nights with the 4th night free.

💳 How we used our $400 Hilton resort credit: We split it across two visits to Ms. Piper’s Kitchen — ~$200 for the birthday dinner on Day 4, and ~$200 for the farewell dinner on Day 6. Getting There

We flew into Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) — one of the most relaxed airports we’ve ever been through. Most flights connect via Miami, Dallas, or Atlanta. We used Alaska Airlines 15K points per person to book return flights on American Airlines. Out of pocket we paid $90 per person in fees on the outbound. Cash value of those flights was over $3,000 for our family — one of our best redemptions for the Caribbean.

We rented a car and were glad we did, but it’s genuinely not a must. Most tour operators provide free hotel pickups, and taxis are easy for everything else. If you do rent, just remember: drive on the LEFT. It feels weird for about five minutes.

💡 What We’d Tell You Before You Go

📅 Book 11 months out for spring break. We’re not exaggerating. Kimpton during peak season books up fast — and the IHG 4th night free benefit only works if a 4-night award window exists. By the time most people start planning, it’s already gone.
✉️ Email your hotel before you arrive. We mentioned the birthday trip in our pre-arrival email to Holiday Inn and were upgraded to a 1,600 sq ft oceanfront suite. The staff at Ms. Piper’s brought out a birthday cake and sang. Costs nothing to mention these things — people go out of their way when they know.
🛒 Foster’s Food Fair on Day 1 — no exceptions. Best grocery store on the island and their buffet is genuinely great. Stock up on breakfast food, snacks, and drinks for the week. Saved us a small fortune vs. buying at resort prices.
🐢 Add the snorkel lagoon at Turtle Centre. It’s a separate ticket but the lagoon is packed with tropical fish and the kids loved it. The whole place is worth at least 2.5 hours — don’t rush it.
🐠 Book Stingray City via Viator with Rakuten cashback. Activate Rakuten before booking and pay with your Amex for extra rewards on top. We saved $86 vs. booking direct.
🚗 Driving on the left is fine. Genuinely — it takes about five minutes to feel normal. The roundabouts are the trickiest part. Most activities also offer free hotel pickups, so a car isn’t strictly necessary.
💳 Track your Hilton credit at Ms. Piper’s. There’s a 16% service charge on everything — factor that in when calculating your remaining balance. Call ahead to confirm the credit applies before you sit down.
🍰 Cayman rum cake at duty-free on the way out. Travels perfectly, doesn’t take up luggage space, and everyone back home will be very happy with you.
